Welcome to Penelope Paints

Contemporary wall design for modern spaces.

Penny Herridge And Julia Capozzi, both London-based artists, design and produce original artwork for contemporary spaces. We use a broad spectrum of techniques to paint on various surfaces including plaster, tiles, glass and metal, and create installation pieces.  Designs are unique to every client and made to complement each individual environment.  We combine light and colour in striking designs that make a strong visual impact, completely transforming the feeling of a space and enhancing the experience of those who occupy it.

We changed the concept of our business from more traditional trompe l'oeil (literally 'trick of the eye') and mural painting to contemporary design after identifying that many modern interiors often lack colour and individuality. As specialists in this field we understand how to complement the style of modern interiors by introducing vibrancy of colour and abstract forms to any given space. By modernising the concept of the mural and trompe l'oeil we are able to design and execute the ultimate visual environment.

As a partnership we pride ourselves on our artistic abilities and communication skills.  Penny has a BA in Fine Art, Design and Photography coupled with many years of experience in commercial art and ceramic mural painting, education, and management. Julia is a conservator/restorer of Fine Art, accredited by the Institute of Conservation. She regularly works freelance for Tate and other London galleries.

Our approach is unique in that we have a wide range of styles and materials to draw on. Each design merits a different approach so a need for flexibility is essential. Trompe l'oeil is one of the techniques used to create the illusion of three-dimensional depth when painting directly onto a wall. We also produce three-dimensional wall installations using a combination of materials.  Some of the work is executed on glass panels, which are hand painted and then placed in situ using metal studs. The beauty being that these installations can be moved if required and taken to new spaces. The material we use to paint upon is essential to the design process and works in unity with the overall image and integrity of the piece. Irish linen canvas on custom made stretchers can be used if a particular concept is required or, for a more permanent addition painting directly on the wall is always a good option.

We use light-reflecting pigments incorporating both natural and specialist lighting in our designs. We draw upon the existing ambiance of the environment to fully enhance the overall effect. Julia's conservation background means we have a broad technical knowledge and profound understanding of materials and techniques. We frequently experiment to develop new innovative effects and use top-quality, non-toxic, environmentally friendly paints that will not fade over time. We can guarantee that all our murals will withstand harsh environments both indoors and outdoors.

The client's vision is integral to the design process and with commercial commissions logos, corporate colours and the ethos of the company can be emphasised if desired.

In order to minimize the impact of our work Herridge and Capozzi will carry out initial site visits to establish the size of space, and design requirements. We liaise with hospitality architects, interior designers and builders if the project demands it. Much of our work is done in studio and then installed, thus reducing any inconvenience to the client. Where a commission merits working on site, most design work is prepared first, then swiftly executed. All aspects of installation work, including sourcing specialist contractors, are the responsibility of Herridge and Capozzi.

Both Penny and Julia have experience of teaching and use these skills to work with teenagers in schools and community youth programs.  Our intention is to inspire interest in the Arts by developing mural and installation projects. Much of this work is funded by local authority grants and requires full police checks.

The ideal modern interiors for our work are boutique hotels, private homes, restaurants, bars, beauty and hair salons, yoga studios, gyms, pools and shops to name but a few. Though essentially a team of two we also have a pool of talented freelance artists who can be called upon to assist with large commissions. Both of us are willing to travel and to date we have successfully completed projects in England, Spain, Zurich and Malibu LA.
